Global warming is real and a threat to the world's animal population. The year 2004 was the fourth hottest on record, extending a trend since 1990. If we continue to emit greenhouse gases at our current pace, our earth's temperature is projected to skyrocket by as much as 10º F in the next 100 years.

Zoo Explorers

The Zoo Explorer program is funded by a 21st Century Learning Grant for 120 students (K-6th grades) of Endeavour and Cambridge Elementary Schools. The program has three major goals including: improving FCAT performance and overall physical fitness of students, and improving literacy level of family members and caregivers.

At the school sites, students receive after-school homework coaching and engage in fitness activities 4 out of 5 days a week. Family members and caregivers may choose to attend adult education and English language classes at the schools also.

Students have the opportunity to come to the Zoo one day a week. Children are immersed in hands-on activities dealing with animals and their environment. These educational activities slip in science and math skills as well. While visiting the Zoo, the explorers have the opportunity to walk around one of the four loops, participate in wetlands and Africa kayaking, ride the train, go dip netting, and other planned activities.
