Junk Mail

Did you know that each year millions of trees and billions of gallons of water are used to create junk mail, most of which never gets recycled? There are several things you can do to reduce how much junk mail you receive.

"When you receive unwanted mail, take a minute to call the company (usually toll-free) to remove your address from its list."

Lagoonadventures.org

Recently Brevard Zoo launched a new website, Lagoonadventures.org, encouraging families to get out and experience the Indian River Lagoon as well as the many additional natural resources available in Brevard County. As an incentive to get out there and have fun, the website will feature monthly nature mysteries families can only solve by visiting sites up and down the Indian River Lagoon. Participants can win prizes on a monthly basis and a grand prize at the end.

The new website and the associated campaign aimed at getting families outside exploring nature, is part of a larger national movement catalyzed by Richard Louv’s book Last Child In The Woods. The book documents the decline in time spent outside by America’s children and reviews the challenges today’s children face in spending time outdoors.

Brevard Zoo is part of a national “No Child Left Inside” movement aimed at reversing this trend. Many of our programs are designed to immerse children in the Indian River Lagoon and the new Paws On, scheduled to open in February, features lots of nature activities that you can do at home or at wild sites in the county. This site is aimed at Space Coast families and has four main sections:
Outings features in-depth advice on great local nature adventures for your family. Maps, forums, and announcements make it easy to plan a great trip.
Mysteries features a different puzzle every month that you can only solve by visiting one of our featured natural sites. Solve the mystery and become eligible to win great prizes.
Caring includes tips, blogs, and forums about how you can help improve the quality of the lagoon.
Ecology includes two interactive activities that teach about the life of the lagoon and current information about what’s happening on the water.

Partners involved include Brevard Public Schools, Brevard County Parks and Recreation, Florida Today, Health First and St. John’s River Wastewater Management District.

So buck the trend, visit Lagoonadventures.org today and get your family away from the TV for a little while!
