Recycle

By reusing many of the products already created--such as aluminum, glass, paper, and plastic--we can reduce energy consumption.

"Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 1,260 miles), 4,100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for 6 months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space, and 60 pounds of air pollution. Source, Trash to Cash"

Inspiring Our Community To Take Action In Natural Resource Conservation

Brevard Zoo is taking action to help preserve our environment for future generations to come. By promoting conservation efforts in our own business practices, we are able to support the Green Team's mission statement: Inspiring our community to take action in natural resource conservation.

A select group of Zoo employees have taken on the responsibility of meeting monthly to ensure that the Zoo continues to be a sustainable organization. This includes recycling paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, batteries, phones, light bulbs, Zoo maps, and using green products in our cleaning efforts. The Zoo also believes in going beyond our property lines. We participate in local beach and spoil island clean-ups. A tremendous amount of trash, much of it being hazardous, is picked up and disposed of properly before having a chance to get into our waterways.

Once a year, the Zoo hosts an event celebrating our planet. Vendors from the surrounding area are invited to set up booths and promote environmentally-friendly practices. The goal of this event is to educate our visitors on how to provide a healthier environment for their communities. This year's Go Green Day event is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2009.

The Green Team will continue to work hard to further our efforts here at the Zoo as well as educate those in the community on how they can make a difference. Remember, we cannot change the past, but we can work harder to change the future of our environment.

Simple Things You Can Do:

  • Raise your thermostat setting 5 degrees in the summer when no one is home and do the opposite in the winter
  • Recycle your old cell phones at the Zoo
  • Only water your lawn twice a week
  • Plant low maintenance or native plants to enhance wildlife instead of the lawn
  • Purchase paper with some recycled content
  • Use a reusable coffee cup instead of a disposable cup next time you visit your favorite coffee shop
