Goeldi's Monkey

Goeldi's Monkey or Callimico, Callimico goeldii, is a small New World primate found in the upper Amazon region.? They are listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List.

Goeldi's Monkey

Goeldi's Monkeys are unique in that they share many of the same features of true New World monkeys and marmosets.  They are the sole species within this genus.  Goeldi's are shy and cryptic, preferring the dense understory. They have black or blackish brown pelage, helping them to hide.

Goeldi's are diurnal (active during the day). Insects are a large part of their wild diet, with fruit coming in a close second.  They are capable of leaping up to 4 meters without losing height and they prefer traveling by clinging and leaping.

The captive population originated mostly from confiscated animals that were intended for illegal trade.   The 2 males exhibited at Brevard Zoo are brothers, born at the St. Louis Zoo.
