Black and White Ruffed Lemur

Ruffed lemurs are primarily arboreal but are often seen on the ground as well.  They are frugivorous, eating fruit, leaves and flowers.  These interesting primates are diurnal (active during the day) and are less active during the cold season in the wild and in captivity.  Ruffed lemurs exhibit a unique behavior not seen in other primate species; they build a nest to raise their infants in.  Both parents care for the young and are highly territorial.  Still, they sometimes live symaptrically with other lemur species.

Ruffed lemurs mature at 2 years of age and can live up to 36 years.  The pair at Brevard Zoo has produced several offspring since arriving here in 2008.
